- Description
- Wiener illustrirte Garten-Zeitung, jahr. 15, (1890) New Begonia hybrids. From the side of the firms Schmitt in Lyon and Cappe in Vesinet the number of Begonia rex X diadema varieties is substantially increased by newly trained hybrids. This new begonia group offers special advantages for the decoration of living spaces, such as the greenhouses, because of the lovely leaf drawings and shapes and because of the growth of the plants. The following four varieties, according to the report of ‘Le Jardin’, are the most beautiful thing that exists in this respect, and the most extraordinary. The names are: Angele Cappe. The plant is of striking beauty, similar to that of Diadema, but the much richer drawing, the silver-white patches of the uniformly sliced leaves contrast very pleasantly with the emerald-green ground. B. Louis Cappe. The silvery tone and the silky pink give the small, deeply cut foliage a special freshness and a charming sight. This variety soon became the darling of cultivators. The culture is a light one, as this variety can be grown quite well outdoors. For example, B. Madame Treyve. Because of its dimensions and because of its growth, it is ideally suited for mass cultivation. The leaves are very uniformly cut, as in the other varieties, brilliant silver white, from which the edge and the midribs stand out effectively. B. Souvenir de Joseph Maria. This last sort can not be compared with the above. It is completely different from these. Myriads of dainty white dots are distributed evenly on a cream-colored ground. One can only make an imperfect notion of the original and strange effect of this novelty. It also keeps its growing outdoors during the summer.
