Plant
- Description
- Begonia Gloire de Lucerne (Wettstein This intelligent and tireless breeder, Handelsgartner Wettstein jun. in Lucerne (Switzerland) the following: B. Gloire de Luceme is the product of a crossing of B. 'Friedrich Schlegel' with the well-known B. corallina. The former plant, also a cross between B. Olbia and Richardson's B. vastissima obtained by us, was the seed carrier and is not yet in the trade. The new seedling grew so rapidly it had already reached a height of 1.20 m the first summer (1886) continuing until autumn and formed a splendor bush. The beauty of the great rich, silky-like, splendidly green-infused, below purple foliage combined with the vigorous, lush growth of the plant astonished every visitor to our nursery. The first year, the plant developed no flowers, which touched us a little uncomfortable. On the other hand, the abundant, slightly rooted cuttings, much taken from them, brought, to our great delight, in order, bright red flower buds almost at each branch tip. These developed similar to those of B. corallina and B ‘Wettsteini’, with respective Abstofsung the male flowers. Among the adult umbels we counted many with 20-25 large and beautiful flowers. The picture executed by Miss Anna Stierlin (Villa Friedheim, Lucerne) is attached. The plant blooms from July-August to December, and we see even now (Dec. 27, 1887), on some specimens fresh male flower buds, which will form until spring. The plant, which can be planted outdoors in nutritious, light soil during the summer, immediately demands, like B. 'Fredrich Schlegel', small pots, especially during the winter, and not too heavy soil. Occasional manure casts affect the growth and cause a more complete development of leaves and flowers. During winter, the plant requires little water, especially if it is maintained in a house with a temperature of + 10- 15 ° R. but it makes flower buds buds. According to the expert judgment, ‘Gloire de Lucerne’ is a worthy addition to the rapidly growing French cultivar 'Gloire de Sceaux', but greatly outstrips it in terms of speed of growth. Because of this property, it is equal to the B. 'Wettsteini' also very excellent formation of tree forms. The plant has only the sole fault that it loses its most beautiful leaves in a short time, with the occurrence of cold, gloomy weather in the autumn, like many other begonias of the warm house; Incidentally, driving new leaves quickly, which are less sensitive to moisture. In the living room, this case will not happen because the air is drier. We thank M. Wettstein very well for the kind report, and we are convinced that his "Glory of Lucerne" will enjoy as good a reception as his dignified breeds.
