- Description
- McGregor Bros. Co., catalogue Springfield, Ohio : 1912. http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/186265 BEGONIA PRESIDENT CARNOT - Remarkably strong growing, stiff, upright habit; flowers beautiful coral red, 11 in large pendent panicles.; Wiener illustrirte Garten-Zeitung, jahr. 15, (1890) New Begonias: Hardly a second genus of plants was allowed to be cultivated in our garden, which, because of its versatility, enjoys such general recognition as the Begonia. But it is also wonderful, what a variety of different known species can offer. Some are charming as regards their splendidly colored and drawn foliage; others are very abundant in blood for long periods of the year, which is why they are used with preference for the planting of flower beds and for the decoration of living quarters and greenhouses. Both pure species and the colossal wealth of hybrids, which was successfully carried out by the happy breeders. This manipulation, carried out with great intelligence, we owe again this year some new varieties, which were just as valuable for culture in the glasshouse as for the open land. Francois Gaulin, the late head of the plant culture of the Tete d'Or Parc in Lyon, crossed B. Olbia X B. Corallina and thus received a new breed, which the well-known Canna breeder Crozyaine brings to the market this year named ‘President Carnot’ and ‘Souvenir de Francois Gaulin’. Both possess the character of the B. corallina, which unfortunately is so little cultivated, namely, a taller growth with numerous stems. The foliage of the former is dark green, purple on the back, and the drooping clusters of these are of a vivid bright coral red color. The second variety has light-green leaves, which had a slight pink color when developed. The bloom clusters are enormous and make a special effect. The flowers are a lively carmin coral red. For both varieties, the numerous appearing female blooms are kept for weeks in their brilliant colors. ; Garden and forest, v. 6, (1893) Begonia President Carnot is a hybrid of the same parentage as Begonia Souvenir de Francois Gaulin. It differs from this in the" color of the flowers, which are lighter; there is also rather more suffusion of color in the leaves.
