- At the last meeting in Leipzig, besides a few impeccable plants of Begonia 'Gloire de Lorraine', Mr. Gustav Taubmann, owner of the brewery in Merseburg, which he had given as a business card to draw attention to his status in this most precious of all autumnal blooms, he also had a group of excellent shrub type begonias 'Alsmeer Gloire' issued. At the suggestion of the esteemed publisher of this magazine, Mr. Taubmann photographed three cuttings of this variety for the garden world. they are late spring cuttings, and one can clearly see in the picture habit, leaves, and flowers of this variety, which are very reminiscent of Begonia credneri, but which exceed them significantly in every respect. At the last large Berlin winter flower exhibition about five years ago, a very similar begonia was placed under the name 'Henri de Vilmorin'; I do not know if this might be identical to this one, but I almost believe it. The resemblance is, as far as I remember, a very big one. Well, be that as it may, the name does not matter, the main thing is that 'Alsmeer Gloire' is a good thing, a not-so-new novelty that deserves more recognition than it has had so far is. In Leipzig, it certainly caused a great stir. 'Shrubby leaf and flower begonia' I call this novelty with some justification, for it has something of each of the three main groups into which the begonias are habitually divided, and combines in them all the good qualities of these three groups! - The stature is shrubby, but still this variety remains much lower as in young credneri, but grows lush and squat. The foliage is also reminiscent of Beg. Credneri, but is larger, lusher and even firmer, but the flowers are much larger and appear in much greater numbers than Beg. Credneri, and then the flowers are of a superior shelf life which is not surprising.
