Description
La Semaine horticole et revue des cultures colonials, v. 3 (1899) Messrs. Lemoine, of Nancy, has lately put on the market new Begonia semperflorens with double flowers, which seem to have a great future. Here are the descriptions given by Mr. Werdmuller, of Nancy, in the Gardeners' Chronicle: B. Boule de Niege (English: Snowball). - Leaves of a bright green. Double, white flowers taking a pink hue in the open air. Stamens and pistils of a dark yellow. B. Gloire du Montet. - Green foliage in the greenhouse but becoming slightly bronze in the open air. The flowers, which are of a pretty dark pink, are very double, and take, once opened, a slightly reddish hue. B. Nancy. - One of the most beautiful varieties, which has green foliage, the flowers of a rose a little more tender than that of B. Gloire du Montet, very well formed and well double. The edges of the flowers are slightly darker than the center. This variety makes beautiful bushy plants. B. Triumph deLorraine. - Leaves green bronze, becoming reddish brown dark in the open air (like those of B. Vernon). The flowers are a dark carmine red, which becomes lighter when they pass, as well as under glass. Besides the variety Nancy, these plants still have, according to Mr. Werdmuller, the defect of not branching out much, and they will have to be improved in this direction. - V.D.
