Leaf petiole the same length as the blade or longer, 5-30 cm long, rather hairless, glabrous; blade sometimes slightly succulent, equilateral or slightly asymmetrical, pinnatinerve at base, light green shiny, with reddish margins, widely lanceolate, 6-19 X 3-18 cm, attenuate from lower quarter and ± acuminate at apex , ± deeply rope at the base; edges doubly dente, rarely whole; teeth acute, oblique, the small ones alternating with the large, both sides of the blade glabrous or a few spike-like hairs on the upper surface, 0.2 mm long; 5-7 veins most often oblique. Stipules lanceolate, very acute, 8 mm long, scaly. Inflorescence axillary, bisexual, 2-5-flowered or uniflorous; common peduncle scapiform, naked, glabrous, 6-25 cm long, branched in cyme bipare if several flowers; pedicel 0.5-2 cm long; bracts small, deciduous. Flowers of varying sizes, small or large. Stamens ± 30, with threads welded at the base in a column of 2 mm, upper part free, 2 mm long; antheres introrses, oblong, obtuse at the top, 2 mm long. FEMALE flowers most often have 4 tepals or 5-6, the external 2-3 oblong, bright pink or red, 10-25 X 4-10 mm, the internals white pink, a little shorter and shorter. Ovary oval, 6 mm long, triaile; unequal wings, the largest subtriangular; styles 3, 1-3 mm, soded in column at the base then bifides; stigma lemon yellow, thick, papillose, transverse semicircular arc, wound end and twisted spiral. Oval capsule, 12 X 15 X 8 mm, a little compressed; median rib alone distinct; large triangular wing, 9 mm wide, smooth, without conspicuous nervation, sometimes forming a vertical crest surpassing the capsule; small very narrow wings, barely 2 mm wide; carpellary part of the capsule often quite thick, texture a little fleshy. Seeds oblong, approximately 0.5-0.6 x 0.25 mm, have fine reticles or dominate, on the larger surface of the seed, the small subcarved meshes, the rectangular meshes being generally limited to only a small lateral part at the base of the seed. - Pl. 28, p. 93. By its inflorescence pauciflores, with flowers up to 40-60 mm in diameter, this Begonia is perhaps one of the most beautiful of the Malagasy flora.
