Plant

Description
Herba parvula, acaulis, usque ad 20 cm a/ta, glabra vel fere glabra. Folio 3-5, membranacea, petiolo gracile plerumque lamina longiore, usque ad 15 cm longo, lamina asymetrica, ovata vel suborbiculare (5-12 cm longa et lata), basi cordata, vix lobata, marginibus vix crenato-dentatis. Florum MALE tepala 2, rosea, 7-8 mm longa et Iata staminibus 12-19, filamentis basi connatis, antheris brevioribus. Florum FEMALE tepala 2, similia, stylis 3 bifidis, stigmatibus in helicem aliquantum tortis. Capsula matura trialata, usque ad 18x22 mm., ala maxima 12 mm lata. Semina subglobulosa, fere ordinatim quadrato-reticulata, 0,25 mm longa. Plant small, acaule or subacaule (sometimes very short common aerial axis of 2-5 mm) of 12-20 cm, totally glabrous or with some, rare sparse hairs. Leaves 10-16 cm long, petiole thick, usually longer than blade. Limb fairly clearly asymmetric, broadly oval-triangular, 5 x 5 - 12 x 12 cm distinctly cord at base, with triangular lobes rather shallow or nearly erased, margins irregularly dentees-crenellated, fairly pale green, texture fine; russet veins, sometimes a little pruinose on the lower side. Inflorescences with peduncles up to 20 cm long. MALE flowers bright pink, has 2 tepals of 7-8 x 7-8 mm. Stamens 12-19, with 0.5-0.8 mm long, 0.5 mm long free-standing threads, about 0.5 mm long, shorter than the anther, 1.5-2 mm long. Flowers FEMALE also has 2 tepals (only one view in good condition), same size as in MALE flowers; styles 3 bifid, hardly welded at the base free part long 2 mm approx. crescent stigma or a little twist. Capsule mature three-sided, up to 17-18 mm tall and 20-22 mm wide, with wings of the same shape, upper edge almost perpendicular to the axis, largest 12 mm wide, the others often barely smaller. Seeds small, almost globose, 0,2-0,25 x 0,15 mm about, have the mark of a network or dominate almost square meshes, with rarely some elongated meshes-rectangles. - Pl. 6, p. 27. This plant seems quite isolated; it is very similar to B. isalensis Humbert and differs in the number of etamines and the type of insertion of the nets, the female flowers in 2 tepals (4 in B. isalensis), the dominant subcarrier mesh seeds (numerous rectangular meshes in B. isalensis). Its ecology is probably different, coming from a region dominated by calcareous soils while B. isalensis inhabits the rocky groves. This Begonia also differs from B. ankaranensis Humbert by flowers and seeds, and from B. anjuanensis Humbert by stigma and leaf shape.
