Description
La Semaine horticole et revue des cultures colonials, v. 3 (1899) THE NEW BEGONIA This year the Heinemann House, Erfurt, announces two novelties whose value is indisputable. One, the tuberous hybrid Begonia (a yellow center) seems to be a very beautiful and very original Variety whose yellow center, sometimes of a deep golden yellow, is detached very well from the red border more or less wide. The Begonia hybrida marmorata (Der Schmetterling) (Le Papillon) (fig.24) is the starting point of a brand-new breed; the bottom of the flower is either a bright crimson or a brilliant carmine on which the irregular white spots are beautifully outlined. This novelty, which has occurred in the cultures of the aforesaid house, has for a number of years been the object of the best care, and, by a most careful selection, has succeeded in fixing the race. Add some of the best qualities of vigorous growth to the class of gigantea and flowers of a respectable size and you can get an idea of the beauty of this new breed. Another novelty, which we find in several catalogs, is the Begonia hybrida gigantea crispa with flowers whose petals are fringes as in the Primeveres of China that everyone knows. Although this race is not yet perfectly fixed, we can however estimate a production of 30% of flowers whose petals are either beautifully undulate or fringed. The remaining 70% belong to the gigantea category and are usually beautiful large flowers like those of the type. The buttons of the crispa are wrapped in such an original way, during the development, that they resemble Begonia buds with double flowers. Finally, in this section we find the Begonia hybrida gigantea Mammut (Fig. 25) whose flowers, leaves and port are of a form, very pretty, and unknown so far in the Begonia tub. Hybrida gigantea class. The crimson flowers are among others so large and so rounded that they can be considered as no more the flower of Begonia. This remarkable variety is, by its beautiful growth and rich flowering, especially recommended for outdoor cultivation. The variety breeds truly from seeds and flowers early.
