Plant
- Description
- Small plant, 10-20 cm tall, fully hairless; underground apparatus in small tubers; fine and short roots; stems little developed, simple, erect, not exceeding 2 cm in length. Leaves pereietantes, few, petiole 2-8 cm long, grele; papyraceous limb, 4-8 X 2-4 cm, symmetrical, oval, acuminum at the apex, obtuse or slightly rope at the base, one of the lobes sometimes a little more developed than the other; ciliary-denteous edges; extremely thin teeth, 0.5-0.8 mm long, curved towards the upper surface of young leaves, then becoming flat; 3-4 ribs starting from the base; few secondary veins, all finely marked on both sides. Stipules small, ovate, long acuminate. Inflorescence in terminal cucumbers, (3-6 pink flowers); peduncle of 4.5-8 cm long grele; bracts small, oblong-lanceolate, 4 mm long. MALE flowers with pedicel greles, 5-7 mm long; 4 ovate tepals, 8-10 x 3-5 mm, the two smaller internals; staminal column 1.5-2 mm long. Stamens 10-15, with short fillet; oblong anther forming a bouquet at the top of the column. FEMALE flowers have 6 uneven tepals, 3 external lexes of 5-8 x 3-4 mm, the 3 internal ones are a little smaller. Ovary ovary, 6 x 2 mm, triaile with a large wing 4 mm wide; styles 3, bifid at the top; crooked stigma. Triailee capsule. - Pl. 5 p. 25. The writing of L'Heritier "erminea" has been preserved here, although Humbert (1971) corrected in "emirnea" in his partial key. In fact, there is no evidence that L'Heritier intended to refer to the geographical region of Madagascar known as Emirne (Imerina Pay); it is probable that he used "erminea" to describe the smallness and the port of the plant, this epithet being used at the time (Stomatium erminium) or ermininum Schwaat., Aizoacees). It is certain, however, that this designation leads to a risk of confusion for Madagascar because of the rather frequent use of the specific epithet "emirnensis" (Imerina country), for example in Gunillaea emirnensis (A. DC.) Thulin, Campanulaceae, or Gerbera emirnensis Bak., Compositae.
