Description
Plant with stem glabrous, a little suffrutescentes, up to 1-2 m in height and 5 mm in diameter. Leaves petalled, smooth, glabrous, 5-15 cm long; blade somewhat fleshy on the fresh (collector's notes), obliquely oval, cusp a acute at the top, barely cord at base, membranous on dry, 7-15 x 5-22 cm, glabrous on both sides; edges weakly undulate-dente; teeth very short and very spacious; 7 main veins from the base and 1-2 pairs of very ascending secondary veins, all reddish and finely marked below. Leaves foliaceous, well developed in a very young state, 10-30 mm long, acute at the top, very quickly deciduous, only the base of the median vein sometimes persisting at the insertion of the petiole. Inflorescence axillary, pauciflorous, in bipolar cymes of pink or white flowers, shorter than leaves; MALE flowers usually in the middle of two lateral flowers FEMALE; axis branched 2 to 3 times, shriveled, 6-9 cm long, first branches 2-3 cm long; obovate, very prominent bracts, 5 x 6 mm, deciduous; pedicel grele, 5-7 mm long in MALE flowers, shorter in FEMALE flower. MALE flowers has 2 suborbicular tepals, 12-15 X 9 -10 mm. Stamens numerous, with free threads, 1 mm long; Linear antheres, 2 mm long, with slightly truncated apex. FEMALE flowers have similar perianth. Ovary oblong, wingless, glabrous; styles 3, thick, bifid on half the length; horizontal stigmatized band towards half of the styles, spiral at both ends. Fruit bacciform, oblong-elliptic, glabrous, without wings, scarcely marked by some longitudinal, not very prominent, indehiscent, white, then orange, 1 cm long, 6-7 mm thick. Seeds medium, rather globose, 0.35 x 0.2-0.25 mm; tegument reticule, with rectangular meshes occupying the largest space. - Pl. 31 p. 101.
